The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Aielo de Malferit is a blue field with a golden lion in the centre, walking towards the flagpole and taking up about half the height.

How it came about

Aielo de Malferit is a municipality in the province of Alicante, in the comarca of the northern interior. Its flag was approved on 28 July 1995.

The lion is not a decorative figure: it is that of the Marquises of Malferit, lords of the town before the lordships disappeared in the late 19th century. The coats of arms of that family carried a golden lion on an azure field.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1995 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. A lion from a vanished lordship

The golden lion on a blue field is a noble emblem, not an allegory. When the Marquises of Malferit stopped ruling the town, in the late 19th century, their emblem stayed: it became the coat of arms of the town and then the only motif on its flag.

  2. The lion looks towards the flagpole

The animal is facing the flagpole, not the centre of the field. It is a minor detail in appearance, but in vexillology the orientation of a figure is part of the blazon: it is written down expressly so that the drawing is unambiguous.

  3. A flag without a coat of arms

Aielo de Malferit has no coat of arms on its flag: it has the figure of the coat of arms loose on the field. It is the most direct way of translating arms onto cloth, and that is why the flag reads at a glance.
