The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Albalate de Cinca is a blue field with a white lozenge in the centre, and inside the lozenge the coat of arms of the town. It is a flag with a geometric frame: the white acts as a background for the coat of arms.

How it came about

Albalate de Cinca is a municipality in the province of Huesca, in Aragon. The flag was regulated by the autonomous community on 28 December 1994, which makes it one of the first approved under Aragonese regulations.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was regulated in 1994 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

the colour of the field, plain and with no stripes.

  • White lozenge

a figure of four equal sides turned on one corner; the rule calls it a ‘losange’ and it serves as a frame.

  • Coat of arms

inside the lozenge, centred. It shows a white wing with a small tower on top.

Fun facts

  1. The coat of arms inside a lozenge, not on the field

Most flags place the coat of arms directly on the background. Albalate de Cinca encloses it in a white lozenge: the coat of arms is seen on white, but the white in turn floats on the blue. They are two backgrounds laid one over the other.

  2. ‘Losange’ is the technical name

The official description calls the figure a lozenge, and adds that the rule names it a ‘losange’. It is a matter of technical vocabulary: in heraldry and vexillology the lozenge turned on a corner has a name of its own, and the blazon uses it to avoid ambiguity.

  3. From 1994: one of the first in Aragon

The flag was regulated in December 1994. Aragon was one of the first autonomous communities to have its own regulations for municipal flags, and that date places it among the earliest approvals of its history.
