The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alfauir is a blue field with a golden rampant lion and, above it, a red cardinal’s hat with fifteen tassels. They are the arms of the monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, placed on the field of the town.

How it came about

Alfauir is a municipality in Vall d’en Bas, in the province of Valencia. Its coat of arms was approved by the Resolution of 21 May 1998, of the conseller de Presidència, published in DOGV number 3,286.

The cardinal’s hat and the lion are the arms of the monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, whose abbot was the old lord of the town. The flag transfers those two figures to the field, with the hat placed over the lion.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1998 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

    the colour of the field.

  • Golden rampant lion

the arms of the monastery of Cotalba.

  • Red cardinal’s hat

the same origin, the abbot who was lord of the town.

  • Fifteen tassels in five orders

the detail of the hat, which on a royal hat are distributed in successive borders.

Fun facts

  1. The arms of a monastery on the flag of a town

Alfauir does not carry its own arms: it carries those of the monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba. When a monastery held lordship over a town, its emblems became those of the municipality. It is a case of ecclesiastical ownership of the territory.

  2. Fifteen tassels, five orders

The cardinal’s hat has fifteen tassels, distributed in five orders of three. On a royal hat the number of tassels marked the rank; on a cardinal’s hat there are five orders. It is a precise heraldic detail that has been respected on the flag.

  3. A lion with a hat on top

The order is unusual: the hat is laid over the lion, not above the shield. On a field with no arms, the hat almost rests directly on the animal, which gives the whole a very particular look.
