The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alfoz de Lloredo is a field divided into two horizontal halves, blue on top and green below. In the centre there are seven golden eight-pointed stars set in a circle.

How it came about

Alfoz de Lloredo is a municipality of the autonomous community of Cantabria. Its flag dates from 4 June 1990.

The seven stars form a circle whose centre coincides with that of the field. The horizontal stripe that divides the flag in two passes through the middle of that circle, so the stars end up shared: three in the upper part and four in the lower.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Blue

the upper stripe, half the height.

  • Green

the lower stripe, half the height.

  • Stars

    seven, golden, eight-pointed.

  • Circle

the stars are arranged around the centre of the field, not in rows.

  • Distribution

three stars on the blue stripe and four on the green one.

  • No coat of arms

no coat of arms, no border, no other figure.

Fun facts

  1. The stripe cuts the circle in half

The line separating blue from green passes through the exact centre of the seven stars. The result is that the circle is cut into two unequal halves —three above, four below— instead of being split symmetrically.

  2. Seven, not six

The stars do not form a round number: there are seven. It is the only way to have a symmetric circle that cannot be divided into equal halves by the line of colour, and that asymmetry is what makes the design work.

  3. Eight points on all of them

The seven stars have eight points, not five. It is a fact of the design: the flag chooses the eight-pointed star, the same one used on Empordan coats of arms, instead of the five-pointed one.
