How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field (the field is the cloth of the flag) with a 2:3 ratio, dark green, with a horizontal white stripe and a purple hand on top.

Stripe
white, it crosses the whole field and takes up 7/38 of its height.
Hand
purple, with the five fingers upwards; it measures 15/19 of the height and is laid over the stripe.
Position
the hand starts 6/57 along the length of the field, measured from the flagpole, the mast side, and is centred vertically.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Almacelles is a dark green field with a horizontal white stripe and a purple hand on top, with the five fingers pointing upwards. The design is a wordplay on the name of the town.

How it came about

Almacelles is a municipality in the comarca of Segrià, in the province of Lleida. Its flag was approved on 17 June 2005.

The hand is the emblem of the Crown of Aragon and appears often in the municipalities of the Crown. In Almacelles the element does not go inside a coat of arms: it is a loose hand, in purple, on a green field.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2005 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Dark green

    the colour of the field.

  • White stripe

horizontal, it crosses the whole field and takes up 7/38 of its height.

  • Purple hand

the five fingers pointing up. It measures 15/19 of the height and starts 6/57 along the length, measured from the flagpole.

  • Position

the hand is laid over the stripe and is centred vertically.

Fun facts

  1. The name of the town is a wordplay

The name Almacelles sounds like ‘al ma cells’, the cells of the hand. The canting element is a hand, and the name is built out of it. It is the same mechanism as the pine of Pina or the flower of Matet, but solved with a figure rather than a plant.

  2. The Crown of Aragon and its hands

The open hand is the emblem of the Crown of Aragon. In Aragon and across the Crown it appears on flags, coats of arms and ornaments. Almacelles uses it without a coat of arms and in purple, an uncommon variant of a very widespread motif.

  3. The measurements are fractions of the field

The size and position of the hand are not left to the draughtsman: the stripe takes up 7/38 of the height and the hand 15/19. It is blazon with arithmetic, the level of detail a municipal decree can allow.
