The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Amieva is a green field crossed by a yellow saltire. In the centre, exactly where the two stripes cross, is the municipal coat of arms.

How it came about

Amieva is a concejo in the east of Asturias, in the mountain. Its coat of arms is divided into three parts: a black bull on silver, a green tree on gold, and green mountains over waves.

No approval date for the flag is recorded on the reference file.

Fun facts

  1. The saltire, not the stripes

The flags of Asturian concejos usually carry the saltire: a cross of two stripes on a green ground. Here it is yellow, which adds a second tone to the design and makes the cross readable from a distance.

  2. A coat of arms in three bands

The coat of arms is not quartered in the regular way: the two upper quarters are silver and gold, with an animal and a tree, and the whole lower part is a landscape of mountains and water. It is a coat of arms divided in bands, not in quarters.

  3. The tree with its roots in the air

The green tree is drawn with its roots visible, the same feature that appears in the flag of Alcanar with the reeds and in that of Albesa with the poplar. The root is what identifies the plant in heraldry.
