The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Banyeres de Mariola is a red field with three figures: a large blue oval in the centre with St George, and two identical coats of arms at the sides.

How it came about

Banyeres de Mariola is a municipality in the province of Alicante, in the mountains of Alicante. Its flag dates from 24 March 1992.

The central oval holds St George on a white horse, with the red cross on his cape, driving his lance into the dragon. It is framed by a golden laurel wreath. The two side coats of arms show a brick castle with a lozenge of the bars of Aragon above it.

Fun facts

  1. Three figures, and only one is a coat of arms

The centre of the flag is an oval with St George, not a coat of arms. The two real coats of arms are at the sides. The composition inverts the usual order: the largest element is not inside the shield.

  2. The two coats of arms are identical

The coats of arms on the left and on the right carry the same image: castle, lozenge, green base and the letters. The perfect symmetry, with no variation from one side to the other, is what makes the whole read as a single thing.

  3. The letters inside the castle

In each coat of arms, the letters N F over L R are written on the castle door. It is an unusual detail: the initials are not on a scroll or in the chief, but inside the main figure.
