The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

A yellow field loaded with a green hill of three peaks, with a golden fleur-de-lis at the summit: the flag of Bellpuig (Urgell, Lleida) is the speaking portrait of its name, a “beautiful hill” decorated with a flower.

How it came about

The coat of arms, approved on 30 December 1981, is the deed of lordship of the village, and its first part shows the arms of the Anglesola —sable fesses wavy on gold —to whom in 1139 the barony of Bellpuig was granted, the first barony bestowed in Catalonia. The second part shows the canting arms of the Cardona (three thistles on red), to whom the barony passed in 1400. The small shield in the centre, over the whole, is the place’s own seal: a hill of three peaks in vert with the largest summit flowering, with a fleur-de-lis, pure wordplay: Bell-puig, the beautiful hill. The plain flag of 1994 removes the partitions and leaves the hill taking up the lower edge.

How it has changed

The coat of arms of 1981 and the flag of 1994 are the only official symbols known to the municipality.

What it means

  • Green hill of three peaks with a fleur-de-lis

the “bell puig”, the beautiful hill that gives the name.

  • Yellow ground

the gold of the small shield that carries the hill.

  • Fleur-de-lis

the ornament of the hill and the finishing touch on its beauty.

Fun facts

  1. The barony of 1139

Bellpuig was the centre of the barony granted in 1139 to Berenguer-Arnau d’Anglesola: the coat of arms keeps their black fesses next to the thistles of their successors, the Cardona.

  2. A coat of arms that is a contract

The two halves of the coat of arms do not decorate: they record two transfers of lordship, Anglesola (1139) and Cardona (1400), like someone putting the deeds on the field.
