The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Benijòfer is a field of wavy white and blue stripes with a red band by the flagpole. Inside the red band there are three yellow shells.

How it came about

Benijòfer is a municipality in the province of Castellón. Its flag dates from 17 January 2002.

The red band is a triangle with its base at the flagpole and its vertex towards the centre. The three shells go two aligned at the top and one below in the centre, and all of them are turned towards the flagpole.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

  • Orientation

Fun facts

  1. A shell repeated three times

Benijòfer carries the shell —the symbol of the municipality, which gives the town its name —three times instead of once. The repetition turns it into a pattern rather than a coat of arms.

  2. Two above, one below

The three shells are not in a row: two at the top and one below in the centre. That triangular arrangement makes the group fit the shape of the red triangle better.

  3. The shells look at the flagpole

All three are open towards the mast side. The orientation is not a detail: in heraldry, a shell towards the flagpole and a shell towards the fly side are two different emblems.
