The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Benissuera is a red field with two horizontal stripes in the central part and a brick castle laid over them.

How it came about

Benissuera is a municipality in the province of Valencia, in the Vall d’Albaida. Its flag is one of the symbols of the municipality.

The castle goes in the centre and crosses the two stripes: its base sits on the red below and its upper part on the blue stripe. The arched door is black and the three towers end in pointed battlements.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Red

the background of the field, above and below the two stripes.

  • Blue stripe

    thin, in the central part.

  • White stripe

    below the blue one, wider.

  • Castle

of brown brick, in the centre, laid over the two stripes. Three towers with pointed battlements and a black arched door.

Fun facts

  1. The castle crosses the two stripes

The figure does not sit on top of the stripes: it cuts through them. Its base drops into the red and its upper part reaches the blue stripe. It is the only composition in this batch where the central figure does not fit within the limits of the field.

  2. Two stripes of different thickness

The blue one is much thinner than the white one, and they are contiguous, with no gap. Far from looking like two equal colours, they work as a single band of two unequal tones.

  3. Pointed battlements, not merlons

The three towers end in triangular pointed battlements, not in the square merlons used on the flags of Atzeneta del Maestrat and Benafigos. It is a different stylistic feature within the same comarca.
