The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Besalú is a field divided into two vertical halves: red at the flagpole with a yellow cross, and on the right with vertical red and yellow bars.

How it came about

Besalú is a municipality in the province of Girona, in the comarca of the Ripollès. Its flag dates from 10 May 1995.

The cross on the flagpole half is not an ordinary cross: it has a shorter second crossbar above the main one, which is the shape of a patriarchal cross. The fly half carries alternating vertical bars, red and yellow, of equal width.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

Fun facts

  1. A cross with a second crossbar

The cross of Besalú has a second, shorter crossbar above the main one. It is what makes it a patriarchal cross rather than an ordinary Latin cross: the added bar is the feature that identifies it.

  2. Cross against bars, two different halves

The flagpole half carries a single figure on a plain ground; the fly half carries a pattern of bars. The flag sets a symbol against a texture, with no element that unites them.

  3. The bars do not reach the flagpole

The bar pattern starts exactly where the red ground ends. The border between the two halves is a straight vertical line, and the bars never cross it.
