How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field divided into four quarters, that is, four equal rectangles, in white and red, with the coat of arms of the town in the centre.

Quarters
two white and two red, alternating like a two-colour chessboard.
Coat of arms
in the centre; it shows three silver towers on a ground of water waves.
Field (the cloth)
only white and red, with no outer border.

What it carries

Its history in dates

Every date in its story, at a glance.

  1. 1265

The town is thought to have been resettled in 1265, under Afonso III

  2. 2003

But its flag and coat of arms were not published until 28 May 2003

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Caminha has four quarters, white and red, and in the centre a coat of arms with three towers on islets. Caminha is where the River Miño reaches the Atlantic, facing Galicia (flag of Galicia) on the other side of the river. It is one of the latest Portuguese flags to be approved.

How it came about

The town is thought to have been resettled in 1265, under Afonso III. But its flag and coat of arms were not published until 28 May 2003, in the Diário da República. It is a very late date: other similar towns got theirs in the thirties. A specialist from Flags of the World thinks that a disagreement between the town council and the heraldic authority may have delayed it.

How it has changed

No earlier flag is documented. Before 2003 drawings of a similar coat of arms could be seen, but different in detail.

What it means

I did not find the official explanation of the figures.

  • White and red in quarters

    the ground of the towns.

  • Three towers on black islets

the middle one is taller, with a roof, a clock and a carved shield.

  • Wavy blue stripe

below, over white waves, the water.

  • Mural crown of four towers

    the scroll reads «CAMINHA».

  2. The name is the head of the Miño

It comes from the Latin Caput Minii, “head of the Miño”, for its position at the mouth of the river.

  3. There were dukes of Caminha
