The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Celorico de Basto has four quarters, that is, four rectangles, black and white, with the coat of arms in the centre. The coat of arms shows a black castle, two bunches of grapes and some waves of water. It took twenty years to be approved.

How it came about

The heraldry section of the Portuguese Archaeologists’ Association (SHAAP) fixed the symbols on 18 April 1947. The Ministry of the Interior approved them on 17 February 1948 and they were published on 24 February. According to Flags of the World, the colours of the flag are those of the coat of arms: silver and black. It is a town, so the ground is in quarters and not in eight gironnies.

How it has changed

There was an earlier proposal, which was never approved.

  1. 1928

Proposal of the SHAAP, recorded in a minute of 13 June 1928. A coat of arms with no castle, with a wavy fess between four bunches of grapes, and a flag of purple and green quarters. It was never approved.

Fun facts

  1. Twenty years from the first proposal

Between the minute of 1928 and the approval of 1948 the design changed. Flags of the World speaks of comings and goings between the SHAAP and the authorities.

  2. A purple and green flag that never came to exist

If the 1928 proposal had been approved, Celorico would have had a flag of purple and green quarters.
