The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Cirat is one of the most loaded in the Valencian Country: five figures on a plain ground. The green cypress is the main motif, and around it are a black lion and two small coats of arms with waves.

How it came about

Cirat is a small municipality in the Alt Millars, in Castellón. Its coat of arms was approved by Resolution of 26 March 2012, of the conseller de Presidència, published in DOGV number 6,750. The flag came two years later, by Resolution of 2 June 2014, published in DOGV number 7,346.

The coat of arms has a field of gold with a cypress in vert —the traditional tree of the village —a lion of sable lying down to its right and two shields of silver with three azure waves, one on each side. The flag transfers that straight onto the field, without the shape of the shield, and enlarges it so each figure can be seen.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2014 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. The cypress is the emblem of the Alt Millars

The green cypress is not an ornament: it is the traditional tree of the locality. In a comarca of red-tiled houses and pure mountain, the cypress is how Cirat says which landscape is its own.

  2. Two years between the coat of arms and the flag

The coat of arms was approved on 26 March 2012 and the flag on 2 June 2014. It is the usual sequence: first the arms, then the cloth that carries them.

  3. A lying lion, not a standing one

The lion on the flag is not rampant, on its hind legs, but lying down, against the cypress. It is a rarer heraldic gesture and it sets Cirat apart from many other Valencian municipalities that also carry a lion.

  4. Two waves, not a river

The two white coats of arms bear three waves each in blue. They do not represent any particular river but water in general: the fountains and gullies crossing the district. It is an abstract symbol, less concrete than usual.
