El Burgo de Ebro is a town in the province of Zaragoza, on the banks of the Ebro. Its flag has two vertical stripes, blue and red, and the municipal coat of arms on top, with a crowned lion and the red cross of St George.

How it came about

The coat of arms and the flag were approved in 1988, and the approval was published in the Boletín Oficial de Aragón on 24 August of that year. The coat of arms, according to the official compilation of symbols of the province, is based on the historical tradition of the town.

How it has changed

It has not changed since 1988.

What it means

  • Golden lion on red

it is the first quarter of the coat of arms of the city of Zaragoza.

  • Cross of St George

the town had a hermitage dedicated to this saint.

  • Monogram of Mary

the letters of the Virgin Mary, in gold on blue.

Fun facts

  1. A lion borrowed from Zaragoza

The crowned lion in the left half of the coat of arms is not the town’s own: it is that of the city of Zaragoza, its large neighbour.

  2. The same cross as London

The red cross on white of the coat of arms is that of St George, the same one carried by the flag of London and that of Barcelona. It is here because of a hermitage of the town dedicated to the saint.
