The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Granada is green and bears in the centre the arms of the Provincial Council, with an open pomegranate surrounded by a border of castles and lions. It has been the official flag of the province since 2008.

How it came about

The Council of Granada approved the flag on 26 February 2008. A resolution of 10 March regulated it and was published in the official gazette of the Andalusian Regional Government on 28 March of the same year. It has a ratio of 2 to 3 and a green corresponding to Pantone 384 C.

Before 2008 the province had been using an unofficial coat of arms for more than thirty years. The flag was updated in 2013, when the arms were modified.

How it has changed

The 2008 flag is the first official one. It was updated in 2013 because of a change in the arms, but the design of the green field with the arms has not changed.

What it means

The flag combines a traditional colour and the arms of the province:

  • Green

the colour of the field of the flag.

  • Pomegranate

the fruit that gives the city its name. It is a “canting” coat of arms, that is, one that draws the name.

  • Border of castles and lions

the symbols of Castile and León, which join the arms of the old kingdom of Granada.

  • Royal crown

    it crowns the arms.

Fun facts

  1. A fruit with a name

In Spanish, granada is the name of a fruit. The arms of Granada draw it so that the name is understood at first sight: it is a “canting coat of arms”.

  2. Thirty years without a rule

The Council used its arms without official recognition for more than thirty years, until the formalisation of 2008.

  3. A confusion in Ceuta

According to FOTW, in 2009 a mural in Ceuta mistakenly used the arms of the Caribbean country of Grenada instead of those of the province.
