Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio divided into two horizontal stripes of the same height: red on top and blue below.

a five-pointed star drawn only with yellow lines, without fill, placed upside down (with one point facing down).

Each element and how many of the 1,390 flags in the catalogue carry it. In yellow, the rarest.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Haaksbergen is a municipality in the province of Overijssel, in the east of the Netherlands, near the border with Germany. Its flag has two stripes, red and blue, and over them a large yellow line-drawn star placed upside down.

How it came about

It was designed by H. G. M. Schulten, a former councillor, and the municipal council approved it on 21 March 1962. He took the red, the yellow and the star from the municipal coat of arms, an inverted golden star on red, and added the blue for the water.

How it has changed

It has not changed since 1962.

What it means

Almost everything comes from the coat of arms:

  • Red and yellow

the colours of the coat of arms of Haaksbergen.

  • Blue

the stream of the municipality, the Buurserbeek according to Flags of the World; Dutch Wikipedia uses Schipbeek, the name it takes further downstream.

  • Inverted star

perhaps the old rural communities of the municipality. Five would be the points and that of the village of Haaksbergen, the centre. It is a hypothesis, with no document to confirm it.

Fun facts

  1. A star on the bells of 1737

The oldest images of the star are on two 1737 bells of the church of Saint Pancras, replaced in 1907. There the points were rounded.

  2. The star became a pentagram in 1948

The coat of arms of 1898 carried a solid star. In 1948 it became a pentagram, a star drawn with crossing lines, and that is the one that passed to the flag.

  3. Older than Morocco’s

The flag of Morocco is also red with a line-drawn pentagram, though green and with the point facing up.

  4. A village with a flag of its own

Buurse, a village in the municipality, unveiled its own flag in 2005. It carries a red triangle that recalls a point of the Haaksbergen star.
