The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Los Montesinos bears a tree in the centre, between two columns with crosses, on a blue field with waves below. The tree is the most evident element: the name of the town literally means “the montesinos”, those who live among the hills.

How it came about

Los Montesinos is a municipality of the Bajo Segura, in the province of Alicante. Its coat of arms was approved by Resolution of 4 November 1999, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 3,638. The flag came almost six years later, by the Resolution of 5 July 2005, published in DOGV number 5,060.

The coat of arms carries in chief the four red pales of Aragon, a pillar with the cross of Santiago and three orders of waves. The flag simplifies: it removes the pales and the pillar, and puts a tree flanked by two columns with the cross of Santiago.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2005 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Dark blue

    the field of the cloth.

  • Green tree

the canting element, which gives the town its name.

  • Two wavy fesses of white

the water, and the reference to the Segura.

  • Columns with the cross of Santiago

the pillar of the coat of arms, simplified.

Fun facts

  1. A tree where the coat of arms had a pillar

The coat of arms approved in 1999 bears a pillar with the cross of Santiago, three orders of waves and the pales of Aragon. The 2005 flag changes the pillar for a tree. It is a rewriting of the motif: the coat of arms kept what it had, the flag took what the town recognised.

  2. The town is named as it is seen

Los Montesinos means those who live among the hills, and its flag puts a tree in the centre. The name of the town is a canting element, like the tower of Torre-xiva, the pine tree of Pina or the elm of Navaixes.

  3. Six years of waiting

The coat of arms was approved in November 1999 and the flag in July 2005. Almost six years with official arms and no legalised cloth.
