The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Pavies repeats its coat of arms on the field: the peacock in the centre of a red stripe, with green above and below. It is a 2003 design that reproduces a coat of arms the town council had been using for over a century.

How it came about

Pavies is a municipality of the Alt Palància, inside the Parc Natural de la Serra d’Espadà. Its coat of arms was approved by Resolution of 28 June 2002, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,307, and the flag came shortly after, by Resolution of 19 September 2003, of the conseller de Justícia, Interior i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,609.

The coat of arms of 2002 was an adaptation to Valencian heraldic rules of the traditional arms of the town. The peacock is a canting element: in Valencian, Pavies is the name of the bird. The red of the ground symbolises the reddish soil of the Serra d’Espadà. In the National Historical Archive a seal of Pavies from 1876 is preserved that matches this blazon.

How it has changed

It has never changed since 2003.

What it means

  • Green

the upper and lower stripes, the colour of the ground and of the Natural Park.

  • Red

the central stripe, the colour of the reddish soil of the Serra d’Espadà.

  • Peacock

the canting element, the bird that gives the town its name.

Fun facts

  1. The colour of the local soil

The red of the central stripe is not just any heraldic colour: it represents the reddish soil of the Serra d’Espadà, where the town stands. The green of the edges is that of the natural park. The flag of Pavies is painted with the two colours of the municipality.

  2. The peacock of 1876 is still there

In the National Historical Archive a seal of Pavies from 1876 is preserved whose blazon matches that of the coat of arms approved in 2002. When the traditional arms were adapted to Valencian rules, nothing had to be invented: the bird had been on the seal for a hundred and twenty-six years.

  3. A central stripe of double the width

The red stripe, with the peacock, is twice the height of the green ones. It is a way of giving more space to the important figure, and like Pego with its third stripe, it is an unusual device in Valencian flags.
