The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Pego is a field of three vertical stripes, with the third twice the width of the other two. The coat of arms, with the wall and the peacock, does not appear: the flag leaves everything out and keeps only the colours.

How it came about

Pego is a municipality of the Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante. Its coat of arms was restored by Resolution of 2 September 2003, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,591. It is a coat of arms of immemorial use, and its restoration cost years of work: the town council did a research project to bring it into line using the seals in the municipal archive.

The flag, simpler, was approved later, by the Resolution of 2 June 2016, of the conseller de Presidencia, published in DOCV number 7,833.

The traditional coat of arms represents the old walled town, crowned by a peacock. That peacock is a play on the place name: in Valencian, Pego is the name of the bird.

How it has changed

It has never changed since 2016. The coat of arms did have a long road before that date.

What it means

  • Green

    the stripe by the flagpole.

  • White

    the central stripe.

  • Yellow with four red stripes

the fly-side stripe, of double the width.

Fun facts

  1. The peacock was mistaken for a double-headed eagle

For years, the peacock on the coat of arms of Pego was drawn as a crowned double-headed eagle, because the draftsmen did not know how to draw the bird. In the National Historical Archive there are four seals from 1876 —two from the Town Council and two from the Mayor’s office— where the error already appears. Historical documentation has its own fauna.

  2. Three seals across two centuries to fix a coat of arms

To bring the coat of arms into line, the town council of Pego looked in its archive for a seal of 1707, badly deteriorated, and then found an older one, of 1458, in which it could be seen that the wall had three gates and not one. The coat of arms approved in 2003 came out of that research of months, not out of an arbitrary drawing.

  3. The flag carries neither the coat of arms nor the peacock

After so many years of work to recover the coat of arms with its peacock and its wall, the 2016 flag carries neither of the two. It stays with three stripes of colour. It is a bit the story of Pego in reverse: first the coat of arms, then a flag that skips it.
