The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Relleu is a blue field with the municipal coat of arms. It is the most discreet design in this group: a single colour and the arms of the town, and nothing else.

How it came about

Relleu is a municipality of the Marina Baja, in the province of Alicante. Its coat of arms was approved by Resolution of 20 January 2006, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 5,203. The flag came three years later, by Resolution of 8 April 2009, of the conseller de Presidencia, published in DOCV number 6,995.

The coat of arms has three partitions, and all three tell what those of any small town tell: the tower alludes to the old castle of Relleu; the scallop —the shell of Saint Hyacinth— is the sign of Saint James, patron of the locality; and the silver scallop on a red ground also recalls the arms of Bernat de Sarrià, former lord of the town.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2009 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

    the ground of the field.

  • Tower

    the castle of Relleu.

  • Scallops

three, in silver on a red ground.

  • Saint James

patron of the locality, whose scallop is the shell.

  • Bernat de Sarrià

former lord of the town, whose arms were also a scallop on gules.

Fun facts

  1. Two scallops that mean the same thing and two different things

The scallop —the shell of Saint Hyacinth— appears on the coat of arms for two reasons at once. It is the sign of Saint James, patron of the town, and it was also the emblem of Bernat de Sarrià, its lord. The coat of arms does not distinguish between the two: a single figure serves for both the saint and the noble.

  2. The ground colour is not that of Aragon

Relleu uses blue, not the colours of the Crown of Aragon, and the coat of arms does not carry the bars either. It is one of the few flags of the Marina Baja that does not play with the senyera.

  3. A flag made of a single figure

The field is entirely blue, without a single stripe, border or line. The only thing there is the coat of arms, and inside it the tower and the scallops. It is the absolute minimum of information in a municipal flag.
