The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Soria is a purple field with the provincial arms in the centre. Soria is one of the least populated provinces in Spain, and its arms are a small summary of it: they bring together the symbols of four comarcas with those of the capital.

How it came about

Nobody knows when or by whom it was created. According to the FOTW flag portal, it is a historical flag: there is no decree or date of adoption, only traditional use. It is the flag of the Provincial Council.

How it has changed

No earlier versions of the flag are known.

What it means

The purple has no official explanation. The arms, on the other hand, bring together the symbols of the four judicial districts of the province and, in the centre, that of the city of Soria:

  • Vine

    Ágreda.

  • Fig tree

    Almazán.

  • Knight on horseback

    Medinaceli.

  • Castle

    Osma.

  • Central oval

a castle with the bust of King Alfonso VIII and the motto “Soria pura, cabeza de Estremadura”, which is that of the city.

Fun facts

  1. A motto that talks about Extremadura without being in Extremadura

The motto “Soria pura, cabeza de Estremadura” appears on the arms of the city and also on those of the province.

  2. A king born in the city

In the centre of the arms of Soria there is a crowned bust coming out of a castle. It is King Alfonso VIII, a native of the city according to local heraldry.
