The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag associated with the province of Tarragona is a red field with the provincial arms in the centre and, below them, the words “Diputación Provincial de Tarragona”. It is an unofficial flag: it is used, but no rule has approved it, and it has changed appearance several times.

How it came about

The arms do have a date: they were adopted by a royal order of 24 March 1928. The flag, on the other hand, is later and less clear. According to the FOTW flag portal, an official book from the nineties said that “there is no flag”, only arms. Even so, the Council has used a red flag with the arms at least since 1975, and only at some events.

How it has changed

According to FOTW, the Council has used several designs, all unofficial: around 1970, a flag with the arms covering the whole field (what is called a banner of arms); around 1975, the red one with the arms and the name of the institution; and in the nineties, a banner of arms again. The 1975 version is shown here, the only one for which a free image exists.

What it means

  • Arms

it carries the four red bars on a yellow ground, the symbol of Catalonia, alongside other heraldic elements, under a royal crown.

  • Lettering “Diputación Provincial de Tarragona”

Fun facts

  1. A province with arms but no official flag

The Manual del Estado Español, an official reference book, said that Tarragona had no flag and that only the arms had been approved, in 1928.

  2. A flag that is brought out on few occasions

Around 1975, the red flag with the name of the Council was only used occasionally, at specific events.
