The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The province of Cáceres has no official flag. The Provincial Council has confirmed that none exists, and the vexillological sources, the study of flags, record it that way. The image you see here, with a red lion on a crimson ground and a golden castle on white, is an unofficial proposal made from the two main elements of the coat of arms of the province.

How it came about

What does exist is an official coat of arms, adopted on 21 November 1980. It is divided into two vertical halves. In one there is a golden castle on a red ground and in the other a red lion on a silver ground. The two symbols recall the kingdoms of Castile and of León, and behind the coat of arms there is a green cross of the Order of Alcántara. An open royal crown tops it.

The flag proposal simply distributes those two symbols over two halves of the field, with no official text behind it.

How it has changed

It is not possible to speak of changes: there is no official flag before or after.

What it means

Since there is no official flag, all the meaning comes from the coat of arms:

  • Golden castle

    the Kingdom of Castile.

  • Lion

    the Kingdom of León.

  • Cross of Alcántara

the Order of Alcántara, a military order that played a great part in the area.

  • Royal crown

the coat of arms bears an open royal crown.

Fun facts
