The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the Amazonas region, in Peru, is a white field with two triangles framing the centre: one red by the flagpole and one green by the fly side. In the middle, the seal of the regional government.

How it came about

Amazonas is one of the twenty-five regions of Peru, on the border with Ecuador and with Brazil. Its flag combines the two colours of the national emblem in a simple geometric composition, with the seal of the region in the centre.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • White

    the background of the field.

  • Red triangle

by the flagpole, the mast side.

  • Green triangle

by the fly side, the free edge.

  • Seal of the regional government

in the centre, between the two triangles.

Fun facts

  1. The colours of Peru in two triangles

Red and green are the colours of the Peruvian national flag. The region places them as two wedges pointing at the centre, instead of in horizontal stripes. It is a geometric device that avoids imitating the national pattern directly.

  2. The flag carries the seal of the region, not a coat of arms

Instead of the departmental coat of arms —the usual pattern in the Andean regions —the centre carries the seal of the regional government. It is a difference of style: the seal is an administrative logo, the coat of arms a heraldic emblem.

  3. A region of border and rainforest

Amazonas borders Ecuador and Brazil, and it is mostly rainforest and river. The flag, however, does not represent that geography: it is an abstract design in colour, one of many that the Peruvian regions have adopted without resorting to heraldry.
