Vexillological description

It is a white rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio. It carries a red Cross of Saint George. In the upper right angle, by the hoist (the pole), below the cross, there is a flory black cross, with two arms crossing the red arms of the Cross of Saint George. In the lower left, on the fly (the free side), there is a silver winged dragon, outlined and shaded in black.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Vallada is a white field with three figures: the Cross of Saint George in the centre, a black flory cross in the hoist angle and a winged dragon on the free side. The two crosses are not placed side by side: the black one is laid over the upper arm of the red one.

How it came about

Vallada is a municipality of La Costera, in the province of Valencia. Its flag has a 2:3 ratio and was legalised by the Generalitat Valenciana. The reference entry behind this description has no history section with approval dates, so they are not detailed here: official blazonry is all that can be asserted.

How it has changed

Fun facts

  1. Two crosses, not one

What is usual on a flag with a cross is to have just one. Vallada has two: the red one of Saint George and a black flory one resting on it. The flag plays on overlaying two religious emblems instead of separating them.

  2. The dragon is silver with detail in black

The winged dragon is drawn in silver —pearl grey— but outlined and shaded in black, that is with the contours and the shadow lines in black. It is a common technique in vexillology: a single silver figure on a white ground needs the outline so it does not get lost.

  3. A single dragon, on the free side

The figure of the animal goes on the fly, the side that waves. In heraldic and vexillological tradition the most identifying element is usually placed on the free side so it reads from a distance in the wind.
