The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Vila Verde is a plain green field, with the municipal arms in the centre. It is a “canting” flag: the colour says the name, because vila verde means “green town”. It is in the district of Braga, in the northwest of Portugal.

How it came about

Flag and arms were published on 25 August 1936 in the Diário do Governo, the official gazette of the time (today the Diário da República). The municipality is somewhat older: it was born in 1855, when the small concejos of Prado, Penela and Pico de Regalados disappeared and joined into one.

How it has changed

No earlier versions of the flag or the arms are known: the 1936 one is the first and has not changed since.

What it means

  • Green

the ground plays on the name of the town.

  • Two poplars with vines

each tree has a twined vine with a purple bunch. I have not found an official explanation.

  • Red mill wheel

at the top of the arms.

  • Blue wavy band

below, the usual way of drawing water.

  • Mural crown of four towers

the sign of a town. The white scroll reads “VILA VERDE”.

Fun facts

  1. The flag says the name, the arms do not

Only the green ground plays on the name. No figure on the arms (poplars, vines, mill) represents the word “green”.

  2. From 58 to 33 parishes

Vila Verde had 58 freguesias (parishes) in 2001. After the 2013 reorganisation there were 33.
