How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio with three equal vertical stripes: red, dark green and yellow. A stripe means a band of colour, vertical, from top to bottom; each third carries in its centre a piece of the coat of arms.

First third (red)
eight yellow discs in two columns of four; each disc measures a tenth of the height of the field.
Second third (green)
an upright yellow cock, centred, taking up three fifths of the height of the field.
Last third (yellow)
the four red pales, the vertical bars of the senyera.
No coat of arms over it
there is no coat of arms drawn on the field nor any border around it.

What it carries

Each element and how many of the 1,390 flags in the catalogue carry it. In yellow, the rarest.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Aitona is a field with three equal vertical stripes: red, dark green and yellow. In each third goes a different piece of the coat of arms, so the coat of arms is split into three vertical bands.

How it came about

Aitona is a municipality in Segrià, in the province of Lleida. Its flag was approved on 15 October 2002.

The three pieces are those of the coat of arms: eight yellow discs in the red third, a yellow cock in the green one and the four pales of the senyera in the yellow.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2002 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Vertical stripes

three, equal —red, dark green and yellow—.

  • First third, red

eight yellow discs in two columns of four. Each disc measures a tenth of the height of the field.

  • Second third, green

an upright yellow cock, centred, three fifths of the height of the field.

  • Last third, yellow

the four red pales of the senyera.

  • No coat of arms over it

the pieces go loose on the three colours.

Fun facts

  1. The coat of arms cut into three bands

The flag of Aitona does something unusual: instead of putting the whole coat of arms in the centre, it splits it. Each vertical stripe of the field carries a different piece of the municipal arms. The coat of arms is still there, but read in three columns.

  2. The pales of the senyera alone in their stripe

The four pales —the vertical bars of the senyera, the emblem of Aragon— occupy the yellow third all by themselves. The most recognisable piece of the coat of arms is the one that gets a whole stripe to itself, with no company.

  3. A cock, eight discs, four pales

The yellow cock and the eight discs are field figures; the pales are heraldic. The flag keeps the three categories of symbol in three separate stripes, so that each element keeps its own air without mixing with the others.
