The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Albons is a green field with a vertical white band in the centre and a white eight-pointed star on each side. It is the simplified version of the coat of arms of the Empordà town.

How it came about

Albons is a municipality in Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, in Catalonia. Its flag was approved on 25 January 1995.

The design takes the essentials of the coat of arms and reduces them: instead of the whole arms, a vertical band with two stars at either side. It is the kind of municipal flag that limits itself to colours and figures, without the shield.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1995 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Green

the colour of the field, in two equal halves.

  • White band

vertical, from top to bottom, two ninths of the length of the field wide.

  • Stars

two, white, eight-pointed. One in the centre of each green half.

  • Size

the diameter of each star is a third of the height of the field.

  • No coat of arms

there is no coat of arms, no border and no other figure.

Fun facts

  1. Two stars and a stripe, no coat of arms

The flag of Albons carries no coat of arms. The complete design is three shapes: a vertical white band and two eight-pointed stars. It is one of the simplest municipal flags in Empordà, and also one of the most legible at a distance.

  2. Why eight points and not five

The official description fixes the number of points, and that is what distinguishes it from a five-pointed star. In heraldry the number of points of a star is a fact of the blazon, not a drawing detail: it is counted so that the flag can be reproduced exactly.

  3. The measurements in ninths

The white band measures two ninths of the length of the field and the star a third of the height. They are rational measurements, the system that lets the flag be reproduced at any size without altering the design.
