The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

How it came about

Alboraig is a municipality in the Comtat, in the province of Valencia. The process is well documented:

  • 2007

the council approved the flag proposal, on 27 March.

  • 2008

a coat of arms project was presented following Decree 116/1994 of the Valencian Government. The three golden maraes were replaced by a carob tree, the legend was removed and the colour of the tower was changed. That project was not approved by the Consell Tècnic d’Heràldica i Vexil·lologia.

  • 2021

after several reports with that council, the plenary approved a proposal that incorporated its recommendations.

  • 2022

the Valencian Generalitat approved the coat of arms, on 28 April.

How it has changed

Alboraig had at least three coats of arms in use: one before 2008, another between 2008 and 2021, and the official one of 2022. The flag of 2007 was designed over a coat of arms that took another fourteen years to be legalised.

What it means

  • Yellow

    the colour of the field.

  • Two blue stripes of 1/10

    the upper and lower edges.

  • Coat of arms in the centre

the municipal arms, laid over the stripes.

In the current coat of arms, the tower of the first quarter comes from the meaning of the place name —Alboraij, ‘watchtower’—; the cross of Saint James, from the Order of Montesa and because Saint James is the patron of the town; and the three maraes were the arms of the Berenguer Mercader. The 2008 project replaced the maraes with the carob tree and removed the legend, an honour granted by King James II.

Fun facts

  1. The seal of 1877 with the pales of Aragon

The Archivo Histórico Nacional keeps the print of a seal of the Mayor’s office from 1877. It is not the coat of arms of the town: it is that of the province, which was that of the old Kingdom of Valencia, ‘or, four pales gules’. It was the usual way of representing a mayor’s office with no arms of its own.

  2. Fifteen years between the flag and the coat of arms

The cloth has flown since 2007; the arms it carries in the centre were not made legal until 2022. It is a reminder that in the País Valencià the flag and the coat of arms are legalised separately, and not always at the same time.

  3. The council that vetoed twice

The Consell Tècnic d’Heràldica i Vexil·lologia rejected the 2008 project and forced a revision of the 2021 one. That filter is what guarantees that arms are not invented: between 2008 and 2021 Alboraig used a coat of arms with no official approval.
