The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alfara de la Baronia is a field divided into two halves with two different figures: a golden jug on the red field and a divided coat of arms on the blue one. The name of the town —la Baronia— is that of the lordship that governed it.

How it came about

Alfara de la Baronia is a municipality in Vall d’en Bas, in the province of Valencia. Its coat of arms was approved by the Resolution of 20 April 2004, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,754. The flag came six years later, by the Resolution of 30 August 2010, of the conseller de Solidaritat i Ciutadania, published in DOCV number 6,350.

The jug and the divided shield are two elements of different origin, which the flag places one on each half of the field.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2010 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Red

the fly half, where the golden jug is.

  • Jug

a clay vessel, the traditional form of the old tricorns.

  • Blue

    the flagpole half, itself divided.

  • Three gold bands

the upper part of the flagpole half.

  • Four fleurs-de-lis on two pales

the lower part, the central element of the coat of arms.

Fun facts

  1. A jug in the middle of the field

The red half carries no coat of arms: it carries a golden jug, that is, a vessel. It is one of the very few Valencian flags where a figure from the coat of arms appears directly on the field, with no fields or partitions around it.

  2. Why it says ‘de la Baronia’

The name includes that of the noble lordship that governed the place. It is not a geographical indication: it is a reminder of who the town belonged to before modern public administration.

  3. Two halves, two weights

The fly half carries a single figure —the jug— on a red field. The flagpole half carries a divided shield with gold bands and four fleurs-de-lis. One side is simple and the other dense: the field shares out the weight of the design.
