The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Burgos is a purple field with the provincial coat of arms in the centre. It is the flag of the Provincial Council of Burgos: it has been used since 1979, but it had no official approval until 2008.

How it came about

The first years of democracy brought many new symbols, and the Provincial Council of Burgos began using this flag in 1979. For almost thirty years it worked without any official rule describing it. That changed on 8 October 2008, when a regulation signed by the institution itself governed it, published in the official bulletin on 17 October.

How it has changed

The design has been the same since 1979. The only thing that changed in 2008 was its official recognition.

What it means

The coat of arms tells the story of Burgos as a capital of Castile:

  • King Ferdinand III the Holy

he appears with an open crown. His mantle is decorated with castles.

  • Three castles on the king’s robe

they represent the jurisdictions of Lara, Muño and Cellorigo.

  • Large castle on the right

Castile, of which Burgos was the historic capital.

Fun facts

  1. Almost thirty years without a rule

The flag was in use from 1979 and was not regulated until October 2008, published in the bulletin on the 17th.

  2. An order for hanging it

The regulation says that, in the buildings of the province, the flag of Spain takes the centre, that of the Council goes to its left and that of Castile and León to its right.

  3. With no political symbols

The same regulation forbids putting the emblems of parties or organisations on the flag.
