How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field (the field is the cloth of the flag) with a 2:3 ratio in blue, crossed diagonally by two stripes of the same width, the yellow one over the white one.

Stripes
a stripe is a band of colour; here they cross the field from corner to corner and measure a ninth of its height.
Branch
a green sprig of boxwood, centred on the yellow stripe, as long as a fifth of the field; it does not go outside the stripe.
No coat of arms
it carries no coat of arms, no border and no other figure.

What it carries

Each element and how many of the 1,390 flags in the catalogue carry it. In yellow, the rarest.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alfarràs is a blue field crossed diagonally by two stripes of the same width: yellow on top of white. On the yellow stripe there is a green sprig of boxwood.

How it came about

Alfarràs is a municipality in the province of Lleida, in the comarca of Segrià. Its flag was approved on 16 January 1995.

The design crosses the field with two diagonal stripes, from corner to corner. The boxwood sprig goes centred on top of the yellow stripe and does not go outside it.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1995 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

    the colour of the field.

  • Yellow stripe

it crosses the field from corner to corner, over the other one.

  • White stripe

of the same width, below the yellow one.

  • Branch

a green boxwood sprig, centred on the yellow stripe, as long as a fifth of the field.

Fun facts

  1. Two parallel stripes on the diagonal

The two stripes are parallel to each other and cross the field diagonally, from corner to corner. The result looks like an oblique band, but with two lines instead of one.

  2. The branch does not go outside the stripe

The description says expressly that the boxwood sprig does not go outside the yellow stripe. It is a concrete instruction: if the drawing did go outside, the flag would be a different one. That is why the rule says it.

  3. The boxwood, the only green

The only figure is green and it sits on the yellow stripe. It is the one point in the design where a colour appears that is neither the blue background nor either of the two stripes.
