How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field (the cloth of the flag) with a 2:3 ratio, divided into two vertical halves: white next to the flagpole, which is the mast side, and yellow towards the fly side, the free edge.

Field
two halves of the same width, with no line between them.
Blue wing
light blue, centred on the white half, with 5/6 of the height of the field.
Black cross
T-shaped, centred on the yellow half, with the same height as the wing.

What it carries

Each element and how many of the 1,390 flags in the catalogue carry it. In yellow, the rarest.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alió is a field divided into two vertical halves, white and yellow, with two figures: a blue wing over the white and a T-shaped black cross over the yellow.

How it came about

Alió is a municipality in Tarragonès, in the province of Tarragona. Its flag was approved by resolution of 4 April 2002.

The design reproduces the two halves of its coat of arms without enclosing them in it. Instead of placing the whole coat of arms in the centre of the field, the field is divided in two and each figure occupies its half. They are the arms taken apart onto the cloth.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2002 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • White

the half next to the flagpole, with the blue wing.

  • Yellow

the fly half, with the black cross.

  • Blue wing

one of the two figures of the coat of arms, five sixths of the height of the field.

  • T-shaped black cross

the other figure of the coat of arms, of the same height as the wing.

The T-shaped cross is that of Saint Tecla, patron of the municipality.

Fun facts

  1. The coat of arms taken apart onto the cloth

Almost all municipal flags place the whole coat of arms in the centre of the field. Alió does the opposite: it divides the field in two halves and spreads one figure across each.

  2. Saint Tecla and the name of the town

The T-shaped black cross is that of Saint Tecla, patroness of the town. The name Alió begins with ‘Ali’, a diminutive of Alio.

  3. Two figures of the same height

The wing and the cross both measure five sixths of the height of the field. Making them equal is what makes the two halves read as one whole instead of two pieces of cloth stuck together.
