The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Arganda del Rey is a field divided into two vertical halves, white and light blue, with the coat of arms of the town in the centre. The coat of arms is divided in three parts.

How it came about

Arganda del Rey is a municipality in the Community of Madrid. Its flag dates from 1996.

The three figures of the coat of arms are Saint John the Baptist, a three-towered stone castle and a bunch of grapes. The saint takes up the whole flagpole part; the castle and the grapes share the fly side.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • White

    the half by the flagpole.

  • Light blue

  • Coat of arms

in the centre, over the join. Spanish in shape, rounded at the bottom, with a closed royal crown on top.

  • Flagpole part

blue, with Saint John the Baptist standing, with a cross-shaped staff and a scroll, and a lamb beside him.

  • Upper right part

red, with a three-towered stone castle.

  • Lower right part

silver, with a bunch of green grapes and its leaves.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms in three unequal parts

The coat of arms is not quartered: the flagpole part is wide and takes up the whole height, and the fly part is divided into two squares, red above and silver below. The human figure keeps the large space and the other two share the small one.

  2. The lamb of the Baptist

Saint John the Baptist appears with his cross-shaped staff and, beside him, the Lamb. It is the traditional attribute of the saint, and without it the figure would be hard to identify: the lamb is what makes him John and not some other saint.

  3. The field has nothing on it

The two halves of the field —white and light blue— are completely empty. All the figures are in the coat of arms, none is repeated over the ground. It is the opposite of flags that translate the arms into loose figures.
