The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Allande is a green field with two wavy yellow stripes and the coat of arms of the council in the centre, laid over both.

How it came about

Allande is a council in western Asturias, in the comarca of Caudeso. Its flag is attributed to Eduardo Panizo and dated to 1984 according to FOTW.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Green

    the colour of the field.

  • Two yellow stripes

wide and wavy, one above and one below, from side to side.

  • Coat of arms

in the centre, laid over the two stripes. It has a blue field, with a cross of open arms, a border of crescents and a golden crown above.

Fun facts

  1. An attributed flag, not documented in a decree

The date of 1984 and the authorship of Eduardo Panizo come from FOTW, the vexillology database, and not from an official decree. Allande is an old council of the northwest and its flag is one of the few in that area with no known administrative publication.

  2. The coat of arms is laid over the stripes

The coat of arms is not on a field of its own: it sits on top of the two yellow bands. It is an unusual compositional decision, because it forces the arms to be read against two colours at once.

  3. Wavy, not straight

The two yellow stripes are not straight: they wave from side to side. In heraldry a wavy division is usually reserved for water or for territories that belonged to a newer lordship. Here it marks the character of the land, in a mountain comarca.
