The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Almatret is a light blue field with a single figure in the centre: a white right hand, with a black sleeve with a cuff of five curved fingers, which takes up almost the whole height of the field.

How it came about

Almatret is a municipality in the comarca of Segrià, in the province of Lleida. Its flag was approved on 5 June 2009.

As in other municipalities of the Crown of Aragon, the hand is its emblem. Here the coat of arms is simplified to the extreme: the flag keeps only the hand, with its sleeve, and suppresses the rest of the shield.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2009 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. A flag made only of one part of the coat of arms

The coat of arms of Almatret has more elements. The flag removes them and keeps only the hand, which takes up almost the full height of the field. It is a maximal reduction: the whole coat of arms reduced to its most recognisable emblem.

  2. The cuff of five curved fingers

The sleeve ends in an open cuff of five rounded fingers. It is a detail of careful drawing, treated with the care the flag reserves for the figure that is repeated on the municipal coat of arms.

  3. Hand and name, once again

As in Almacelles, the name of the town is related to the hand. Almacelles plays with the cells of the hand; Almatret repeats the central figure of the Crown. In both cases the flag is an answer to the name.
