The flag of the province of Teruel is white, with a narrow red cross crossing it from side to side and the provincial arms in the centre. It is one of the oldest provincial flags: the Provincial Council approved it in 1956.

How it came about

The plenary session of the Provincial Council of Teruel approved the design on 26 October 1956. Not long after, a decree of 10 May 1957 made it official. It is described as a white flag, crossed perpendicularly by a narrow red band, with the provincial arms in the centre.

How it has changed

It has not changed since it was approved.

What it means

The flag does not explain its colours. The arms, on the other hand, bring together several symbols of the province:

  • Red and yellow bars

they recall the old Kingdom of Aragon, to which Teruel belonged.

  • Bull under a star

symbol of the city of Teruel.

  • Virgin with the Child

Santa María of the city of Albarracín.

  • Castle with reeds

    the city of Alcañiz.

  • Central shield

Saint George on horseback, defeating the dragon, the patron of Aragon.

Fun facts

  1. A dragon-slayer saint in the centre

In the middle of the arms there is a smaller shield with Saint George on horseback killing the dragon, the patron saint of Aragon.

  2. Approved in 1956 and official in 1957

Between the Council’s agreement of 26 October 1956 and the decree that made it official on 10 May 1957, a little over six months passed.
