The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Andalusia is the green-and-white: three equal horizontal stripes, green, white and green. No other colours in the field.

How it came about

Andalusia is an autonomous community of Spain. Blas Infante designed this flag in 1918, and the Junta de Andalusia adopted it as an official symbol on 30 December 1981.

The design is one of the simplest that exist: two green stripes and one white, all of the same width. The original colours are green and white: green and white.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1981 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Green

the upper and the lower stripe.

  • White

    the middle stripe.

  • Coat of arms

only in the institutional version, in the centre of the white stripe. It measures 2/5 of the width of the field.

  • Civil version

the same three colours, with no coat of arms on top.

Fun facts

  1. Designed in 1918, adopted in 1981

Blas Infante designed the green-and-white in 1918. It took sixty-three years to become an official symbol. It is a rare case: the design is almost eighty years older than its approval.

  2. Two versions, depending on use

The civil version is green and white only. The institutional one carries the coat of arms of Andalusia in the centre of the white stripe. It is an unusual distinction: the same flag changes its appearance depending on where it is used.

  3. The coat of arms only appears in one version

The coat of arms is not on the flag but in one specific variant. The official description makes it clear: two fifths of the width, over the white stripe. The flag flown in the streets does not carry it.
