The flag of Apulia is a white field with a green stripe by the flagpole and a red one by the fly side. At the top it carries the name of the region written, and in the centre the coat of arms with an olive tree.

How it came about

Apulia is a region in southern Italy, the largest in the country by area. The flag carries the very name of the region: Puglia in Italian.

The coat of arms has an olive tree in the centre, with its roots showing. Around it are a chief in gold with six green roundels and a red octagon on a blue field.

Fun facts

  1. The name is written on the flag

Few regional flags carry their name on the field. Apulia does: «REGIONE PUGLIA», in yellow, above the coat of arms. It is more a mark of identity than a national symbol.

  2. Two frames inside the coat of arms

The olive tree is enclosed in a white octagon, and that one in turn in a red one on a blue field. They are two concentric frames, a device that separates the central figure from the rest of the coat of arms without needing a border line.

  3. An olive tree with its roots in the air

The olive tree is drawn with its root visible, the same feature that appears in the flags of Alcanar with the reeds, of Albesa with the poplar and of Amieva with its tree. In Mediterranean heraldry the root is the part that identifies the crop.
