The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Arenas de Iguña is a field with three areas of colour and no figure: blue on top, a white triangle at the bottom by the flagpole and red across the rest.

How it came about

Arenas de Iguña is a municipality in the autonomous community of Cantabria, in the comarca of Campoo. Its flag is one of the symbols of the municipality, alongside its coat of arms.

The white triangle starts at the flagpole edge and points at the centre of the field. Its two sides are diagonal and its base is the lower edge.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Blue

the top part of the field and the lower corner of the flagpole.

  • White

a triangle whose vertex points at the centre and whose base is the lower edge, against the flagpole.

  • Red

the lower part towards the fly side, including the lower right corner.

  • No figures

no coat of arms, no border, no other figure.

Fun facts

  1. A triangle pointing at the flagpole

The white is not a stripe: it is a triangle with its base on the lower edge by the flagpole and its vertex towards the centre. Its shape is that of a packet or a loaf, and it divides the field into two unequal halves.

  2. Three colours and no figure

There is no coat of arms, no local symbol, no name written. The flag is defined only by how the blue, white and red are distributed.

  3. The white touches the flagpole and the red does not

The flagpole half is blue on top and white below; the fly half is blue on top and red below. The flag is split into two columns of colour that are only distinguished at the bottom.
