The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Begues is a field divided into two equal vertical stripes, white by the flagpole and red by the fly side, with an uprooted green tree in the centre and two black coins.

How it came about

Begues is a municipality in the Garraf, in the province of Barcelona. Its flag was approved on 23 December 2016.

The tree and the two coins are the marks of lordship of the barons of Eramprunyà, who were lords of the place and minted their own coin.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2016 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

    by the flagpole.

  • Red stripe

    by the fly side.

  • Tree

  • Coins

two black discs, one touching almost the upper edge and the other the lower one.

Fun facts

  1. Two coins for the barons who minted

The tree and the two coins are the marks of the barons of Eramprunyà. It is not an ornament: the barons had the right to mint their own coin, and the flag recalls that right with two black discs, one above and one below.

  2. The tree with the roots showing

The tree is uprooted, with the roots visible. It is the same feature that appears on the flag of Albesa with the poplar and on that of Alcanar with the reeds: the root is what identifies the plant in heraldry.

  3. Coins at both ends

The two black discs are not together in the centre: one touches almost the upper edge and the other the lower one. With the tree between them, the flag is divided into three heights: coin, tree, coin.
