The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Aurskog-Høland is a municipality in the south-east of Norway. For almost forty years its flag was yellow with a black crayfish. In 2020 the municipality merged with its neighbour Rømskog and kept that one’s symbols.

How it came about

The crayfish coat of arms was drawn by the heraldist Truls Nygaard and approved by royal resolution on 4 February 1983. It was inspired by an oval seal the municipality already used, with hills, four fir trees, a lake and a crayfish. As in almost all Norway, the flag repeated the coat of arms on the cloth.

How it has changed

The municipality changed flags when it merged.

    2020

After joining Rømskog, the new municipality adopts that one’s symbols: white log tongs on blue.

What it means

  • Crayfish: the animal of the lakes of the municipality, which already appeared on its old seal.
  • Log tongs (current flag): a woodcutter’s tool for gripping and moving logs; it comes from the coat of arms of Rømskog.

Fun facts

  1. It kept the neighbour’s flag

In the 2020 merger, the new municipality, which kept the name Aurskog-Høland, did not keep its crayfish but the coat of arms of Rømskog.

  2. The same draughtsman

Both flags, the crayfish one and the tongs one, come from coats of arms drawn by Truls Nygaard and approved in 1983 with only a few months between them.
