The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Baja California is a white field with the coat of arms of the state in the centre and the name written below, by hand.

How it came about

Baja California is a state in north-western Mexico. No approval date is recorded in the reference file.

Inside the coat of arms, two half-length figures, a man and a woman, hold hands over a landscape of green hills, a sun and the sea with a ship. Below, a third figure seen from behind opens its arms towards the scene. At the top, a motto and a rising red sun.

Fun facts

  1. The name written by hand

Of the repository flags that carry the name of the territory on the field, Baja California is the only one in handwriting. It is not a typeface but a signature.

  2. Three figures and two gazes

Two figures look forwards and hold hands; the third, seen from behind, looks towards the landscape. The composition puts whoever works in front of what they work on, and leaves the viewer behind the open figure.

  3. A sun, not a crown

The crest is not a royal crown but a rising red sun. It swaps a dynastic emblem for a star, in keeping with the working character of the coat of arms.
