The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the Áncash region, in Peru, is a plain blue field with the coat of arms of the regional government in the centre. The coat of arms shows a sun among snow-capped peaks, the sea with fish and a golden condor as its crest.

How it came about

Áncash is a region in the north of Peru, on the Pacific coast, north of Lima. Its regional coat of arms combines three geographical elements: the mountain range with its snow-capped peaks, the sea with its fishing, and the condor as a symbol of the whole.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Deep blue

the background of the field, from the flagpole to the fly side.

  • Regional coat of arms

at the exact centre of the field.

  • Sun among snow-capped peaks

the Andes mountain range and its height.

  • Sea with fish

the Pacific and fishing, the economic basis of the coast.

  • Golden condor

the crest, the Andean bird that represents the region.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms that sums up three geographies

Áncash has a coast, a mountains and, in its eastern part, rainforest. The coat of arms does not choose: it gathers the sea with its fish, the snow-capped peaks with the sun and the condor flying over both. It is a flag-panorama.

  2. The condor as a crest

The golden condor crowns the coat of arms as its crest. In Andean heraldry the condor is the bird that represents the whole mountain range, and placing it above the coat of arms —the place of the crest— makes it the highest sign of the region.

  3. A field of a single colour

The flag of Áncash is plain blue, with no stripes or divisions: all the visual weight rests on the coat of arms in the centre. It is the simplest pattern and also the most common one in the regions of Peru.
