The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Barberà del Vallès, a town in the Vallès Occidental (Barcelona) that grew around the old royal road, is red and carries at the bottom two horizontal stripes fixed one against the other: a yellow one and, below it, a dark green one, each a fifth of the height of the field. The three colours are not decorative whim: they are those of the municipal coat of arms.

How it came about

The coat of arms was authorised by a decree of the Generalitat on 14 May 1985: on a gold ground, an open red castle —the castle of Barberà, a lordship and from 1702 the seat of a marquisate —accompanied by two green pine cones, the “canting” emblem of the house of Pinós, marquises of the place, and topped by a marquis’s crown. Sixteen years later, the plenum adopted a flag of its own, on 15 July 2001, and the DOGC of 8 August published it: from the coat of arms the three tinctures were extracted —the red of the castle, the gold of the ground and the vert of the pine cones —and laid out as stripes.

How it has changed

Never: the flag published in 2001 is the one in force.

What it means

  • Red

the colour of the castle of the municipal arms.

  • Yellow stripe

the gold of the ground of the coat of arms.

  • Dark green stripe

the green of the pine cones of the Pinós.

  • No drawn coat of arms

it is a “plain” flag, translating the arms into stripes of colour alone.

Fun facts

  1. Pine cones that are a surname

The two pine cones of the coat of arms are a heraldic joke: “piña” in Catalan is pinya, and they were the canting arms of the Pinós, lords and marquises of Barberà.

  2. A marquisate with a crown of its own

The castle of Barberà was the centre of a marquisate created in 1702 for Josep Galceran de Pinós: that is why the coat of arms —and the visual identity of the town —are crowned with a marquis’s crown, not an earl’s or a king’s.
