The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

On a red field, a black hill lying along the bottom and, on top of it, a golden hoopoe: the flag of Bellmunt d’Urgell (the Noguera, Lleida) is a bird perched on a hill, and that drawing explains a local nickname.

How it came about

The traditional coat of arms —officialised on 17 November 2009 after a municipal file opened in 2008 — sums up the place: on gules, a hill of sable rising from the base, the canting arms of the “bell munt” (beautiful hill) that crowns the village, and above it a hoopoe of gold, so frequent an inhabitant of the district that the neighbours of the area call the people of Bellmunt “puputs” —hoopoes in Catalan. The flag, approved on 9 August 2012 and published in the DOGC of 12 September, turns the hill into a black triangle along the lower edge and leaves the bird occupying the centre.

How it has changed

With no earlier versions: it was the first regulated symbol of the municipality.

What it means

  • Black triangle

the hill that gives the village its name (a canting hill).

  • Golden hoopoe

the bird of the countryside that nicknames the neighbours.

  • Red ground

the tincture of the coat of arms.

Fun facts

  1. A nickname of a bird

The inhabitants of Bellmunt d’Urgell are known by their neighbours as “puputs”, the Catalan name for the hoopoe: the coat of arms and the flag adopted the nickname as local pride.

  2. The hill lying down

In the coat of arms the hill is a mound; in the flag it stretches until it becomes a triangle taking up the whole lower edge, like a miniature mountain range.
