The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Benafer is a blue field with a red triangle by the flagpole and four yellow fleurs-de-lis on the other side.

How it came about

Benafer is a municipality in the province of Castellón, in the Plana Baixa. Its flag dates from 5 April 2001.

Inside the red triangle there is an orb: a white sphere with two bands of gold and a gold cross on top. The four fleurs-de-lis take up the right part of the field, in two rows of two.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Blue

    the background of the field.

  • Red triangle

large, with its base on the flagpole edge and its vertex pointing at the fly side.

  • Orb

a white sphere with two bands of gold, at the centre of the triangle.

  • Cross

of gold, at the top of the orb.

  • Fleurs-de-lis

four, yellow, in two rows of two, on the right side.

Fun facts

  1. The triangle is the pennant

The red is not a stripe: it is a pennant that starts at the flagpole and opens out towards the fly side. It is the oldest shape of flags, and here it replaces any coat of arms.

  2. An orb with two bands and a cross

The central figure is not a plain sphere: it carries two horizontal bands of gold and a cross on top. That whole —the sphere, the bands and the cross —is what heraldry calls a globe girt and surmounted by a cross.

  3. Four fleurs-de-lis in two rows

The yellow fleurs-de-lis are not in a straight line: they go in two rows of two, above and below. It is the only repeated figure on the flag, and it takes up the right part of the field.
