How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a light green field —the cloth of the flag —with a 2:3 ratio, with a red cross in the centre outlined in a thin yellow line.

Field
light green and with no divisions.
Cross
red and potent, with the four finials in the shape of a T; the arms measure 1/13 of the height and the cross as a whole 10/13.
Border line
a border line is a thin edge; here it is yellow, of 1/52 of the height, and it surrounds the cross.
No coat of arms
it carries no coat of arms or any other figure.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Green and, crossed in the centre, a cross with curved T-shaped finials (potent), red and outlined in fine gold: the flag of Beuda (Garrotxa, Girona) is the result of a deliberate heraldic pruning.

How it came about

The municipal coat of arms, with its red cross potent outlined in gold, is surrounded by four further pieces: a millstone, two fleurs-de-lis and a golden key. When the town council opened the flag file on 27 March 2008, it asked the usual question: how do you draw a coat of arms on a field without losing it? Beuda’s answer, approved on 14 April 2010, was the most radical: keep the cross, the green ground and nothing else — “the other pieces are discarded to maintain simplicity”, says the file record. Published in the DOGC of 3 May 2010, with the gold border line of 1/52 of the height as the only concession.

How it has changed

With no earlier versions: the first and only official flag of the municipality.

What it means

  • Green

the vert of the coat of arms, the landscape of the Garrotxa.

  • Red cross potent

the main piece of the municipal arms, with its curved “T” finials.

  • Gold border line

the gold outline of that cross, thinned to a thread.

Fun facts

  1. Less is flag

The rule of Beuda explicitly justifies the economy: of the five figures of the coat of arms, the flag keeps only the cross and discards the rest “to maintain simplicity”. A case of design by renunciation.

  2. Three colours with a catalogue number

The official file for the flag fixes its colours with Pantone references: green 375 U, yellow Process Yellow U and red Super Warm Red U — so that the cross never comes out the wrong shade.
