The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Cabó is a dark green field with a white rooster in the centre. It is a model of a municipal flag: in Catalonia the Generalitat does not design the flags of the towns, it merely gives its approval to the one each town council adopts, which is why almost all of them have a very precise official description.

How it came about

Cabó is a small municipality in the comarca of the Bages. Its flag was approved on 17 June 2008 and published in the Diari Oficial de la Generalitat de Catalunya of 9 July of that same year, number 5169.

The official description is very concrete: a rectangular flag, with a ratio of two high by three long, in dark green, with the white capó of the coat of arms in the centre. And it states the size: the capó must occupy two thirds of the height of the field and four ninetieths of its length.

The rooster of Cabó is not just any rooster: it is the capó, the figure that crowns the coat of arms of the municipality. That is, the flag does not carry the whole coat of arms but only its top part.

How it has changed

It has not changed: it is the flag approved in 2008 and there are no later modifications.

What it means

  • Dark green

the background of the field, in a single colour.

  • White rooster

the figure of the capó of the coat of arms, in the centre and looking at the flagpole, the mast side. It is the only thing that appears on the flag.

Fun facts

  1. It is not the whole coat of arms, it is the capó

The flag of Cabó does not carry the coat of arms but only the capó: the figure that crowns the coat of arms. A municipal coat of arms has three parts —the shield, the helmet and the capó —and Cabó keeps the third, the most airy and recognisable one, on the green field.

  2. The flag says how big the rooster is

Many Catalan flags do not limit themselves to saying which drawing appears, but also how big it must be within the cloth. Cabó says it: the capó takes up two thirds of the height of the field and four ninetieths of its length. Few flags get that detailed.

  3. Two dates for one flag

On 17 June 2008 the Cabó flag file was declared in order, and on 9 July, two months later, it was published in the Diari Oficial. In the catalogue of Catalan municipal flags the date usually shown is the publication one, which is why the adoption date can end up blurred.

  4. The rooster of other towns

The rooster is a figure widely spread through Catalan heraldry. Castellgalí also carries it, and there it is explained by an old belief: that the name of the town sounded like “Castell del Gall”. Often the animal appears because of the name of the place, not because of its history.
